The Rising Pune Supergiants (often abbreviated as RPS) are a franchise cricket team based in the city of Pune, Maharashtra that will play in the Indian Premier League from 2016 for only two seasons. The team serve as one of the replacements for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who were both suspended for two seasons due to illegal betting by their respective owners. The franchise is owned by Sanjiv Goenka-led New Rising.
The team name was announced on 18 January 2016 by Sanjiv Goenka at Kolkata. Raghu Iyer was appointed CEO for the Supergiants.
From their approach, it appeared that Pune were keen to recreate the Chennai Super Kings magic with MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming at the helm of the affairs. The managed the big names, roped in Indian seamers and also got hold of a couple of quality overseas all-rounders. Pune also chose not to bid too big, with their biggest buy being just under the 5 crore mark, proving that they are not amateurs despite this being their first auction.
